about

third in the inward & outre psych trilogy
recorded 2010 - 2012. Released 2014

Tom Fazzini's music has been heard on Jarvis Cocker's 'Sunday Service,' BBC 6Music and New Jersey's WFMU : Fazzini's 7" - 'stats / the programme' ( 2011) & 'castle on wheels / essence' (2012)

Review of "Stats" b/w "The Programme 7" from the album. www.discogs.com/label/Loophamystery+records :

'If you could plot out some arcane constellation made up of the Rock in Opposition movement, 20th century composition, David Lynch's modus operandi and English folk music, the mutant quasar Tom Fazzini (The man? The Band? See the weird liner notes for the source of this confusion) would pulse right along handily. These two numbers are classic art-rock, presented free from the distracting instrumental pyrotechnics of prog, in the erudite and measured strokes of 1970's Eno or, more recently, Jim O'Rourke at his most obtuse. "Stats" fingerpicked acoustic guitar figure flirts with atonality, creating a bracing backdrop for a hoarsely muttered (and frankly, creepy) vocal. Jabs of musique concrete, strange clanks, and swatches of feedback lacerate the calm before a nearly incongruous swell of Uillean pipes and Celtic percussion kicks in near the end. "The Programme" backs more simple electric guitar pluckings with a sustained ringing ambience, like clusters of notes sounding on a glass organ. Here, the vocal is much more on the UK-prog tip (kind of like any of the three early King Crimson singers who sounded more or less alike ), complemented towards the middle by a chorus of recorders. Both songs seem to be unfinished, a pair of surreal, exquisitely inked cocktail-napkin sketches that leave you with more questions than answers. A forementioned weird story on the insert explains the mystery identity of one Tom Fazzini, making the package and the idea of this project all the more apocryphal. A very strange record indeed, and one that seems out of time and place in the best possible way. Limited to 200 copies.' (Adam MacGregor)

THE WIRE. Soundcheck | Size Matters By Byron Coley. Stats/The Programme
7" on loophamystery :

'Great new solo record by the creator of the brilliant Neck To Neck lp back in 1984. This acoustic guitar-rich single reminds me of early 1990's Current 93 jamming with Pip Proud, and possesses all the genteel, bizarre menace that implies. A piece of work as astounding as it was unexpected. '

THE WIRE. Soundcheck | Size Matters By Byron Coley. Castle On Wheels/Essence 7" on loophamystery :

'Another great solo single by the creator of Neck To Neck. The guitars are a mix of electric and acoustic this time, and other voices are heard, so it lacks some of the creepiness of the last one. But it's still a bizarre, unique and utterly mesmeric piece of otherworld volk.'

THE RECORDER COLLECTOR. single cream by Spencer Grady. spencer.grady@metropolis.co.uk Castle On Wheels/Essence 7" on loophamystery :

'Reminiscent of eccentric folkies such as Simon Finn and Ed askew, Fazzini's tone is decidedly less arch than on his previous single Stats. This here's the sound of a mystical arcadian utopia where Robert Wyatt tumbles into a dense patch of undergrowth and peers beneath a stony plinth to discover a parliament of caterpillars passing militant legislation on arable mildew rotation.'

VITAL WEEKLY 810 /vital@vitalweekly.net Stats/The Programme 7" loophamystery :

'Erm who? Tom Fazzini? Who he? It wasn't a name that's very familiar to me either , but already in 1984 he made a record called 'Neck To neck' on A-Mission Records (which we also know from O Yuki Conjugate and Asmus Tietchens), being re-released by Locust Music and in the mid 90s he was a member of A Small Good Thing, one of the few off-shoots from O Yuki Conjugate. Ah, now we are talking. This 7" is his first sign of life in 5 years, following another release on Locust in 2006. On 'Stats' he uses an acoustic guitar, whispering voices and bagpipes/organ sounds washing in and out. Quite intimate music with an odd alien character. something similar goes on the other side: spoken word moving over to a bit of singing , a cosmic like sine wave, and again an introspective guitar. Odd music indeed, and with merely six minutes a bit hard to judge from what Fazzini is all about, but this is certainly a record that made me curious to hear more.'

Stats/The Programme 7" loophamystery LM S01 :

'Operating from the same cloistered woodlands as apocalyptic folkies Current 93 and Comus, Fazzini populates his take on England's hidden reverse with a myriad of psychopathic punch-like voices, like those you might find harbouring grudges in John Cowper Powys' fevered imagination. Meanwhile, Stats boasts some of the best bagpipe usage I've heard all year.'

Essence/Castle On Wheels 7", loophamystery :

'Falling like soft summer rain, "Essence" is one side of a double A- side by Tom Fazzini, a delicate drift of acoustic guitar leading the song into Lone Pigeon, Fence Collective territory, creating a short and haunting track. On the flip, "Castle On Wheels" is a stranger affair that opens with a short poem about dogs with their tails tied together, before a minimalist musical backing and repeated vocal phrase creates a quietly psychedelic atmosphere, the whole track constructed with a wonderful ear for detail. A small triumph.'

SeeSound : seesound.co.uk (White label - Castle On Wheels/Essence)

'Do you ever watch those property programmes where a couple get dragged around three or four houses by an annoying presenter with the view of buying one of them? The couple never do buy any of the properties. It's most unsatisfying. But, in most of these shows there is the Mystery House. I don't know why they're labelled the Mystery House because the couple didn't know anything about the other two or three houses either. Anyway, I've come across a couple of mystery tracks. I don't know who they're by or anything about the band, I don't even have a name. Maybe someone out there knows who they are. Maybe not. Maybe they're just sailing the seven seas, pumping out music, forever to be an enigma. The first track is called 'Castle On Wheels.' It starts off with an overlong sample as the beginning of a kid reading a story. When I say overlong, it's a third of the whole track. In the rest of the song nothing really much happens except a bit of a floaty melody and some chanting about a castle on wheels. Maybe it's someone's camper van, who knows. The second track sounds like more of a song when it starts with a lo-fi acoustic intro, but then the lo-fi acoustic intro never really turns into a song, there's about 30 seconds of singing over the guitar and then it's cut short. Over.
These tracks do sound like a work in progress, maybe I've stumbled across something that wasn't meant for public consumption for some time. If that's the case then I apologise. There's real potential here as both the tracks do have a nice mellow sound with charismatic vocals (when they are there.) Twelve songs of these - what appear to be unfinished songs - on an album would be quite frustrating though.
I hope these aren't the finished article because they could be good. I wonder if anyone will ever know who the band is. Answers on a postcard.'
